Lord Chambray is the first Maltese craft brewery, situated on the picturesque island of Gozo. They approached ByVolume to reposition the brand as the original craft beer brewery in Malta and completely reinvent the visual identity. Malta is a place where you can immerse yourself in unspoiled beauty and wilderness, so we identified an untapped opportunity for Lord Chambray to create a meaningful message, embody the infectious buzz of the local culture, provoke a sense of escapism and become a truly inspirational brand.
We built a whole new logo that ditched the previous graffiti-like look, and tied the design to the fort of the same name dominating the main harbour. The old barracks of Fort Chambray, where the brewery was originally meant to be, also inspired the die-cut shape of the new labels. Since the core beers of their portfolio already borrowed the name from local landmarks, the inspiration was set. After touring the islands with the team, we went on to design deconstructed illustrations full of colour for each location, pairing them with custom typography and captivating infographics.
The brewery portfolio featured two additional product ranges: seasonal beers made with local and foraged ingredients, that became the main characters of the labels, and limited releases made to fulfil the brewers’ creativity; this range was completely redesigned with a stripped down visual system that highlights the more technical side of these beers with a single colourway.
Following the packaging we defined the new brand tagline We Speak Beer, to emphasise the multilingual nature of the local culture and remark the status of Lord Chambray as the first craft brewery in Malt
