Husband and wife team Harry Ryder and Simona Caruso set up Bottega Caruso in the bustling seaside resort of Margate, Kent in 2016. Bottega, as the locals now call it, is a highly seasonal and produce-led restaurant inspired by the culinary traditions of Simona’s homeland of Sannio, an ancient area of Campania in central Italy. Her family there still makes by hand all the tomato sauces, pickles and preserves used in the restaurant, where fresh pasta is also handmade daily.
To mark the move to a listed building in the heart of the old town, they approached us to redesign the brand logo and create a packaging system for their preserve jars, since the new location allowed them space to set up a deli corner for take away. We stressed the family name Caruso with a new calligraphic lettering reminiscent of a signature, a testament to the high quality of the food and the service. Figurative artist Patrice Moore painted beautiful watercolours of all the ingredients of their preserves, so we worked on a classic-looking label layout to highlight the purity of the ingredients and create a cohesive look across the differentsized jars on shelf.
The restaurant was featured in the 2021 Michelin Guide and has become a real landmark on the local food map.
